He Is Our Portion

Psalm 73:26, "My flesh and my heart may fail me, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." Portion simply meaning supply, or satisfaction, everything that we need. The Lord of heaven above is our portion. Psalm 84:11 says, "The Lord God is a sun and shield, the Lord gives grace and glory, no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly." Surely, we can say that our cup over-floweth. Psalm 121 is a beautiful example of God being our portion, thru all eight verses, He is all sufficient for us, for our help comes from Him, the One who made heaven and earth!

Our faculties will all begin to stop someday. Our heart will become weak and we will not have the life blood pumping through us to sustain us any longer; our bodies will gradually become weaker and weaker, not being able to clothe, feed, or take care of ourselves. My dad passed away of ALS and this is exactly what happened and there was no reversing it. The word translated strength here is the word for rock. Who is the Rock of ages? Psalm 18:2, " The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

D. Martyn Lloyd Jones says, "God will be a rock that will hold me. He cannot be moved. He cannot be shaken. He is the Rock of ages, and wherever I am, and whatever may be happening, however my physical frame is behaving, and even when the things of earth are passing away, God the Rock will sustain me and I shall never be moved.”  Deut. 33:27, "The eternal God is a dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms."  When all is crashing in around you, when the devil never seems to be ceasing to accuse you, and when all light seems to be being extinguished around you, you can look up into the eyes of One whose arms will never let go of you. The Lord will protect you from all evil, He will keep your soul.

To finish today, I turn to one of my favorite English Puritans, Thomas Brooks, "O Christians, God is an all-sufficient portion, His power is all-sufficient to protect you, His wisdom is all-sufficient to direct you, His mercy is all-sufficient to pardon you, His goodness is all-sufficient to provide for you, His word is all-sufficient to support you and strengthen you, and His grace is all-sufficient to adorn you and enrich you, and His Spirit is all-sufficient to lead you and comfort you. What can you desire more?"  Surely goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives, and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!”
